Homestudy Process Overview
In order to adopt in the State of Ohio, the adopting person
or couple must have an approved homestudy. The homestudy
must be completed by a licensed agency in the state of residence
of the person or couple.
The first step in the homestudy process is the completion of the
State of Ohio Application for Child Placement and payment of an
application fee of $250. After your Application and fee are received,
an assessor (social worker) will be assigned and the homestudy process
will begin.
In Ohio, the homestudy process is divided into three parts:
1. Documentation: FBI and Ohio fingerprinting, Medical Statements ,
Financial Statement, Home Fire Inspection, References, etc
2. Twelve (12) hours of training: The majority of our training is completed through the reading of specific books and discussion with your assigned assessor.
3. Assessor interviews and counseling: A minimum of 3 meetings.
When this process is completed, the homestudy will be approved.
Under Ohio law, the approval remains in effect for a period of 2 years.
Thereafter, the homestudy must be updated through a renewal of the
documentation and one assessor interview. The homestudy may be
updated twice (for a total period of 6 years). Thereafter, a new homestudy
must be completed.
